View Full Version : Is it possible to "carve" into a mugg?

I'm interested in attempting carving into a mugg, much like you would a jack-o-lantern.
I'm curious: has anybody tried this? What tools did you use to make precision cuts?
If they're too difficult, are there suitable substitutes that could pass as a Mugg head, but easier to carve into?
Thanks in advance, gang!
Sincerely,

yes it is possible. just draw it first then use a very sharp X-acto type knife. cutting is not a problem :)

What I want to do is carve into it like a Jack O Jantern. I want to cut out the eyes and mouth, as well as the lid, so that I can easily insert an LED light and replace it (if need be).
Will an exact-o-blade make the precision cuts? Should I make cuts in layers until it gives in? What's the best procedure to do something like this without it looking like crap?

BUMP!
Anybody else have any suggestions? If I use an exacto-blade, how might I make the cuts? I can imagine that if I cut at an angle, it will cause problems with the look and feel of the face. Has anybody else attempted carving into a mugg?

The vinyl head is very soft. An X-Acto blade will have no problem cutting into it. You might try boiling it first to soften it more. If you're nervous about screwing it up just buy an extra Mugg at the store and practice on that one first.

adidaskorn3000 is right. It is very soft.. all you need is some muscle control on you hand. lol.. Goodluck.
A little masking tape can help as a guide when cutting. Go slow and steady :) Good luck

Also try a "hot knife". You can get it by the wood burning tools at a craft store. It is an exacto blade attachment for basically a soldering iron. I tried it. It cute through plastic like hot butter.
