View Full Version : WARNING: Possible Carrie & Co or Copycat

WARNING:
There a user on eBay going by "mmatt*" and "motumatt*".
I paid for a pre-sale Vader v.2 from him, and then got a
little nervous & looked on the boards and found this thread:
http://www.mightymuggsforum.com/showthread.php?t=8951
http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/mmatt*_W0QQ_ipgZ50QQ_sopZ12?_rdc=1
http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/motumatt*_W0QQ_ipgZ50QQ_sopZ12?_rdc=1
I don't know if he's legit or not, but there a few people have won
"pre-orders" from him and have yet to receive their items.
Some red flags:
1) He seems to be selling the same type of stuff that Carrie
was selling.
2) One of the accounts was opened in May '09, when
Carrie was about to go AWOL.
3) He is using a 30-day pre-order for a lot of items.
4) He has close to 1900 items for sale!!!
5) He claims to be a "full time student with limited storage".
How does one have room for 1900 items?
6) He says, "I'm here to help", like Carrie did, on a customer
complaint in the feedback.
The jury's still out but it was recommended by an admin (thanks,
you know who you are) to put the warning here. I'll post the
outcome either way.
I'm hopeful I can get my money back if it goes bad but I should've
done my homework!!! Caveat emptor. :(

that carrie and co situation was ridiculous.

I just wrote a long rant in the other thread so I'll post it here too.
I just don't see how he can even get version 1 darth vaders. They aren't in any revision waves. I know it sucks but I really don't see this guy coming through for most of you that have one. Some have said they won auctions for a dollar or two. It would make no sense for him to honor those auctions because he would only lose a substantial amount of money. My local comic book guy has showed me invoices for muggs and he pays $13-$15 each. So there's no way this college kid without a storefront could get them for less. I would advise anyone thinking of bidding on his auctions to wait and see what happens to all his intial preorder items. He also lists items the same way as carrie and co and it really annoys me. Instead of just making ten or fifteen listings with a quantity of 5 or 10, he makes 150 different listings that take up half a page on ebay. It doesn't make sense to list stuff like that because it costs him more. Sorry for the long rant, but it's like they say. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is.

Here is a question:
So what could he possibly do to you if you just create a claim before the 30days. He's already left positive feedback for me. What can he do? anything?

07-06-2009, 11:26 PM
Hey all!
After multiple messages to the seller he responded. I told him I didnt want to wait for the figure to come in anymore and would just like a refund. He had no problem doing so. I have all my money back. I hope this helps people. Keep at him it took me multiple days to get him to refund. If he doesnt want to threaten to make a claim... that seemed to speed things up.

i got my refund also from him so i guess thats just how he is running his sale on ebay.

Just wanted to say that this seller is not related to carrieandco in any way. Unsure why it was thought that the two accounts might be linked, other than the preorder thing {which lots of sellers do in various categories throughout the site}.
That being said, I hope anyone who deals with him ends up with a good experience, rather than a bad one!

Thanks Bracket. It's always nice to have someone from there help out!
I think everyone felt it was the same person based on how they were listing auctions. Listing tons of auctions and selling at a (what appears to be a loss or too good to be true) price. So, many people are quite skeptical. I guess we'll just have to keep checking on the feedback.

Thanks, Bracket. Glad that there's no connection and that people
are getting their money back.
I am still a little apprehensive and opened this thread for the reasons
listed in the first post (items sold, style of the listings, etc.). It's good
that he isn't Carrie & Co but it seemed similar enough to warrant a warning.
I heard from him last night saying that the items will be shipped "as listed
in the item description" (ie. within 30 days). Sounds a little vague and I
haven't decided what to do yet...
I hope people (myself included) have a good experience with this seller.
He'd potentially get a ton of buyers if he comes through!

i emailed this guy to becareful with doing preorders on muggs since hasbro is not the most timely and that there was someone before who got banned from ebay from all the negative feedback from trying to sell preorder toys. here was his response.
Hi! I have had great luck getting my Mugg shipments like clockwork, but I do appreciate the email. Preorders do require knowing the system well and how to order. If Mugg fans are concerned, I may consider pulling preorders and just stocking them. Ive heard from a few guys they got burned and thats the last thing I want a buyer worried about. Thanks for the email!
i'm still going to avoid it.

Thanks, Pikey. I asked for a refund and he agreed days ago. Still no refund yet.
He really seems more concerned about his 100% feedback than anything else.
The trickle of negative feedbacks is starting...

Well, I finally got my refund after a few persistent emails. He was quick to
talk but slow to act, but he finally did send my refund. Thanks to everyone
for their help & support.
amberbratt - glad that you received your mugg and that he came through
for you. :) I'm still apprehensive and will probably shop elsewhere but...
he looks good so far. I hope he comes through for everyone else.
PS - Yes, I read it as a 30-day pre-order and did it as an impulse buy. Since
he is so new, I should've waited to see if the 30-day wait was real or not.
It would make for a great scam or ponzi scheme:
use eBay as a 30-day "credit card"
list 1800+ items ($270+ in listing fees)
collect money from winning bids
USE collected money
protect the good eBay seller status (positive feedback) so that people continue to bid & pay
use new money to buy items for the old winning bids or for refunds
keep it up to get free money funded by everyone else who pays & waits
It works as long as people keep sending money. If it catches up, just fold
and run like a someone else who could've stopped listing and just taken
care of existing orders. This was running through my head after I won...
Don't go getting ideas now. :)
Anyway, I am a little gun-shy and will be shopping more carefully in the future.
Thanks, everyone.

i must be doing it ALL wrong because i have to wait for either 1. positive feedback or 2. the package to be confirmed as delivered. I've only used paypal as method of payment so maybe this doesn't apply. not that i WOULD do this, just saying that I think after being around this long, ebay/paypal have safeguards in play.
and i'm really glad it all ended on a good note!

Correction: amberbratt has NOT received her mugg yet. My mistake in reading her post.
Please post updates, people. Thanks.

I gave a negative because he lied about product description. He ended up calling me and gave me the sob story about being a student in need of money. I reversed my negative feedback but I really wish I had not. But it was not a pre-order. I read the whole description and I still felt like I was scammed in a way because I care about box quality.

email looks like this (i edited out my info :p)
Our records show that you recently received an email from mmatt* through the Ask Seller a Question or Contact eBay Member features. This email may be fraudulent and an attempt to do one of the following:
- Obtain your eBay password
- Gain access to your eBay account
- Use your eBay account for fraudulent activity
- Set up an outside-of-eBay transaction which may be fraudulent
This kind of email is often called a "phish" or "phishing attempt," and the people who send them are known as "phishers." Phishers use these methods to try to get your personal information, such as user names, passwords and credit card details. Because the emails may sometimes come through the eBay system, the phisher may seem to be trustworthy and have a good reason to contact you.
***Important - Protect Your Personal Information***
- Don't reply to the sender either through the eBay system or your personal email account.
- Don't open any links or cut and paste any Web addresses into your browser from the phishing email.

Wow. I sent him numerous e-mails asking questions from him and getting " O " answers or replies. Now I guess I'm lucky as I have been got before. If the seller dosnt reply then they dont want my business. I'm in Australia so maybe he was just after American details? I'm not sure but I'm really sorry for those guys who didnt get there money back. Ebay can be great and then it can bite you hard.
