There have been a bunch of really fun arcs. You might want to start with choice trade paperbacks:

If you like, try The New Avengers.

There have also been a lot of HUGE Marvel events the past few years. Here's the order of the events if you want to read them:

House of M
Decimation
Civil War
Avengers: The Initiative
Annihilation
World War Hulk
Spiderman: One More Day (huge impact on Spiderman's life)
Secret Invasion

If you start with the New Avengers, it will lead up to Civil War. The Avengers were disassembled a good while back when Scarlet Witch went nuts and killed a bunch of the team. If you're interested in following her story, you'll definitely want to start with House of M. It also leads up to the current state of the mutant population, which continues to be severely compromised.

I really had fun reading the Marvel Knights: Spiderman comics. They went for about 30-some issues and then went into a story arc called Spiderman: The Other. It was VERY interesting, as Spiderman gained a whole bunch of kickass powers. Unfortunately, they never really explored his powers after that. If you just want some fun reading, I'd recommend picking them up. It also explains how the Venom symbiote ended up with Mac Garragan aka The Scorpion. In fact, if you like villains, the new Thunderbolts comics are VERY fun to read. I highly recommend them. The new Venom is in those issues.

Anyway, I hope I helped somewhat.

Sincerely,

For avengers you should start by reading avengers disassembled that will get you familiar with all of the modern characters. then go right into the new avengers series. there are 7 volumes out right now, that brings you up through civil war (awesome) and right into secret invasion. If this series begins to bore you its still a great leaping point off into the modern marvel universe. Good luck. If you need more specific advise hit me up again.

as a comic enthusiast for over 15 years now, i feel compelled to share this tid-bit with you.... if you're just starting, don't buy your books.

i know there's huge debate over this, but hear me out. it's knida like the music scene... i download lots of music off the net, but only rarely do i find somthing worth-while. i delete all the stuff that sucks, and for the albums that i keep, i go buy them, or donate money to that band via their web-site.

same with comics. go to a site (my fav is isohunt.com) for torrents. (you'll need a torrent downloader program - i suggest vuze). search for the comic you'd like to read, and download. there's lots of great programs for reading comics on your computer - i'd suggest CDisplay... it's free and works great.

delete the stuff you'd rather not ever see again, and the series or books you like, go buy them... whether on eBay or a book store (sometimes you can find used ones for sale at public libraries). and delete the files from your computer.

as long as you're using the digital comics as a previewing medium, i'd condone it.

best of luck.

The Avengers ends up turning into 2 series after the Civil War. The New Avengers + Mighty Avengers. You'll understand why later. I believe there are 7 New Avengers trades right now, but more will be on the way. As for Mighty Avengers, I think there are about 3 trades, thus far. There will be more. I just don't own them all yet, as I'm trying to keep up with all of my hobbies. lol. I hope I was able to help you hop on the Marvel train, as the stories are very interesting and good fun to talk about with your fellow fanatics. :D

Its the trade paperback. yeah though. It was a miniseries where the scarlet witch first became a problem. It really kicks of the avengers in the modern age.

There have been quite a few Transformers comics, actually. The two most recent that I remember were cross-over titles.

Transformers/New Avengers

There are a bunch of cross-over titles. The only books I would recommend from Civil War is the MAIN story, Spiderman, and the Initiative. Also, the Death of Captain America would be a worthwhile read, too. The main book looks like this:
