I want to do a mugg that has shading detail on the clothes and possibly the face...but I have no clue where to begin...what do y'all think?

I'm relatively new at customs, but from what I know about paint, I'd say take the color you want for that particular part of the mugg and add a touch of black for shading.
Am I right?

use blacks and white to vary your tints and hues
if you are using ceramcoat or other craft acryllic, they come in hundreds of colors, you can likely find a color just right for the shading or highlights without having to add black or white. I prefer this because, should I have to come back in a few days to touch something up, I don't have to worry about having any of the mixed color still fresh or trying to match it again

buying the color of the shade does seem better than mixing the color yourself. especially since it takes me hours to paint...and then, how do you know where to put the shading? just looking at alot of reference pics?

Yes. Even the best artists use reference of some kind (for some things, if not for everything).
