Hey guys, Ive been busy and ignoring my natural cravings for Muggs lately. Im working on something though and find I need Sculpey. Anyone care to share the best place to find it? Also, wouldnt mind experimenting with that plumbers sclupt I saw ToyBoy using recently, think WaterStop? I go over to my local (Canadian) craft/art supply store and only find modeling clay, which after I made Afro Samurai, would swear never to use again. Much appreciated folks!

I've actually heard that Mighty Putty works well.
But don't take my word for it. ;)

On the recommendation of a few people here, I finally picked up some Aves Apoxie Sculpt™ a couple of weeks ago. It's not sold in stores (unfortunately), but you can get it either at the Aves web site or a couple other places online. I got mine from Ebay, 4lbs of the stuff. If you wanted to compare it to something they DO sell in stores, you could say it's similar to Mighty Putty™ or Milliput™, but that wouldn't REALLY be a fair comparison. It's far superior.

I also use Sculpey III™, which I get at Hobby Lobby or Michael's craft stores. Don't know if they have those in Canada. They put it on sale every couple of months for $.99 ea, and that's usually when I pick it up. There's a Polymer Superstore I almost ordered from once, online, and they sell Sculpey. Of course, quite a few people sell it online. ;)

I've used another Air Dry Clay, PLUS by Activa, but it always cracks, sometimes a little, sometimes a lot, once dry, and it's not adhesive.

what do you do if you want to model something that wraps around the mugg? Sculpey bakes at a fairly low temp, can the mugg handle the 130C/275F to bake it right on the mugg itself?

Ive had a bad experience with melting a mugg. Maybe sculpt it on a crap mugg, bake it, cut it off at 2 points and glue it on your good mugg and repair the cuts. Thats generally what I do

Used mighty putty on my first custom. It was difficult to work with. I plan on using Sculpey on the next one.

When I've baked stuff, and it needs to conform to a Mugg, I always use one of my Experimental Muggs, never one whose paint job I care about. The Experimental Muggs' paint jobs have actually come through pretty well, through repeated bakings, but why risk it?

Aves Apoxie Sculpt, for sure! I've used three or four different products, and have found this to be my favorite.

i've had good luck with wrapping a thin layer of foil on a crap-mugg, and sculpting with sculpey on top of that, then transferred it to the finished mugg... i've also used mechanical means (dowels) to sculpt pieces around, then drilled a hole in the mugg & glued in place (after baking seperate from the mugg).

the best bet is to try, try, try again, until you find the right method to your own madness. ;)

Aves Apoxie for the win. I officailly endorse that stuff! Even though Ive had pretty good experiences with super sculpey as well.

you can only buy Aves online, I think. You can get it from the Aves website, ebay, or other sites.

I got mine from http://www.sculptingstudio.com
