I thought everyone would benefit from some pictures and explanation. I've started a commission of the Marvel Comics character Bullseye for a forum member. Here are some pics of his progress.
1. I cleaned the mugg with soap and water.
2. I laid down a light coat of a gray primer (spray paint / neutral color)
3. Then I covered that with the Mugg's undercoat. (white)
4. I used the masking technique. (I drew out all of the parts of the mugg with pencil or sharper and then I taped over them. I used an exacto knife to (cut my finger open, that was an accident, not recommended...three stitches) cut out the shapes that were to stay covered/ stay white.
5. With the parts that were to stay white covered with form fitted tape I put an overcoat of black (with spray paint) over the mugg. Black is Bullseye's main color so this made sense. If you have a mugg with a lot of one color this is (as I've found) the best way to go about it.
7. At my current stage (pics below) I am filling in black paint around the details on the mugg and covering up the pencil marks left behind under the tape.
8. More tips to come soon!
