View Full Version : Mighty Muggs Signature Sillhouette

I've seen quite a few customs that almost entirely change the silhouette of the Mighty Mugg. I thought a Mighty Mugg is unique for it's shape isn't it??? When a custom designer makes a Mugg and its shape is majorly altered, I find that it defeats the purpose of being a Mighty Mugg at all. Does anyone else agree with me or atleast understand what I mean?

I know I'm not someone who should be criticizing (sp?) other's customs since I haven't even made one myself, but I just wanted to know what other members thought about this.

I agree. Minor head sculpt changes I can deal with like Are-Jay's buns on Chun Li. I really don't understand things like boobs though.

personally I really like the sculpting. the "3D" mugg is typically difficult to master, and when done well it really stands out. while I dont feel that pulling apart a mugg and making it into something else is true to the muggs "spirit", if there is such a thing, certain 3d accents and accessories look cool IMO. don't get me wrong the original 2D concept still kicks a$$ and props to people like Are-Jay who are talented enough to make it look right, but I am loving trying my hand at sculpting and seeing others do it as well.

i completely agree with you. It is because of the Chun-Li competition that made me write this thread. I absolutely adore Are-Jay's Chun-Li, where as the "boob'ed" up Chun-Lis look very un-natural.

I forgot who made the winning Vega (I think it was Kire... as usual:rolleyes:), but I personally thought the sculpted hair was a bit too much for me. The entire Vega was extremely skillfully crafted and a beautiful work of art, but I thought it strayed a bit from the Muggs' originality. Nonetheless I still agree that Lestat's Vega deserved the win.

As a customizer I disagree, I do what I want. There are a lot of things to be done with this canvas.
I think that it's hard for people at times to let go of the traditional "Muggish" look because it is what initially attracted them.

I tend to do them as I would a Dunny or Munny...anything goes, but due to the fact that they come pre-painted with charters in a very specific style, some expect to have all customs follow suit, some do some don't.

Totally agree with BALD. Its a custom mugg... if we all followed in the same mold, then it wouldnt be unique... I love that everyone has their own style and its only a matter of time before we start seeing some changes in the real muggs (spiderman removable mask, logan with retractable claws) Like Bald said, a mugg is a canvas, some artists like to stick with realism and others are at the opposite side of the spectrum with surrealism... its all art in the end!:). As long as you can tell its a mighty mugg, its a job well done

I see where you guys are coming from with the canvas concept. To each his own i guess. Goodluck in the future competitions!

I agree with BALD and Kire but I, personally, like to stick to the original Mugg shape.

i dunno..im working on my first custom right now and ill have in on here soon. my my argument is this. take a look at the darth maul mugg it has horns but does it really have horns. the whole concept of mighty muggs is lost when u give it "horns" or boobs...whatever...lol. some stuff is a necessity like bumble bee. but as an artist u have to be able to give it that depth with ur skill in shading. its a mighty mugg not an action figure?!?!?!?

Having worked on a couple customs now, I can tell you that just usin' your art skills for shading and depth is a HECK of a lot easier than sculpting, LOL.:D And, anyway, I still like 'em all. It's a blank canvas and it's yours. Do with it as you will.;)

ok having been an artist my intire life sculpting is def not the hardest thing in mugg customs. ive done it al. my high school still has my art in the show cases so i promise i know. i could scult anything a hell of a lot quicker than i could paint it. maybe with muggs its not that hard to do either. but im just saying the whole concept of mighty muggs are lost when u add 30 ponds of sculpting clay to it.

The whole concept of a blank canvas is lost when you create art on it, using whatever medium you choose? Is that what you're sayin'? Usin' hyperbole like "30 lbs of clay" doesn't help that illogical comment, and neither does "I've been an artist my intire [sic] life." I'm (truly) glad scuptin' is easy for ya. Heh, I could say I've been an artist my entire life, also (admittedly, not in the womb), and I can just about guarantee it means I've been an artist for FAR longer than you have been. Pfft. Doesn't make sculptin' on a six inch figure easy. It has been awhile since I've played with Play-Doh™. LOL.

Confession: I never liked Play-Doh™, so my parents always got me some cool modeling clay instead.

The argument over this is silly ... of course. :D There will NEVER be a correct answer, 'cause art is just about the single most subjective thing you can think of. How the heck can you really argue over it? Heh, just stick to "I like this style of Mighty Mugg Custom," and some of the rest of us will stick to "I like 'em all, and they're still Mighty Muggs to me." ... both ways, they're still art. After that, who cares? ;):)

i agree i was just saying "in my opinion" but yea in the big picture who cares. muggs are great and customizing is a personal project no matter what?!?!?

this is a thread from an awful long time ago to be commenting on lol odd first post i might add... ...i agree with the too much sculpting defeats the purpose of customizing a mugg because then it becomes a sculpture ...kinda like using a mugg as an armature instead of making a 'mugg' character

about the sculpting: 100% agreed,
about the concept: when i first saw optimus prime mugg, i think its really looks cute, form and style generated from a "tough" look of optimus prime into a cute mugg - thats basically the concept of mighty muggs

but now with a touch of muscle and shadow, the "cute" looks from muggs concept is gone, and it is getting pretty similar with the real character.

but....honestly,for me, i still like them as long as there is a sense of AWESOMENESS!lol
