I just did a custom of myself for Christmas to give to my girlfriend (she asked for it, I'm not vein, ha). I went with more of a cartoony look for myself as opposed to realistic, but I know there were some other customs showcased that were more realistic. I used Ceramcoat paints after using Krylon Fusion primer. I was pretty happy with it, considering I haven't really painted much until very recently. FISH's custom is what I used and it was a big help.

Thats an awesome idea for a custom.
The gun is going to be really tough unless you have some ideas or experience with messing around with sculpting or the accessories (which I do not, so no real advice there...)
What I've done to make my customs thus far, is buy a random mugg and spray paint it with a primer (I recommend a white or gray), then use acrylic paints and just...work on it?
One thing I do (as a beginner) is, before painting, lightly sketch on the features I want with a mechanical pencil, then, if neccesary, go over those lines with a sharpie marker to make them standout (this also helps me avoid painting too far, personally).
Making your first mugg is fun while also somewhat confusing and discouraging, so I'd say stick with fairly easy characters until you have a bit of experience under your belt.

Personally, I think the blank muggs are a bit of a rip off. They cost the same price as normal Muggs, so, assuming you have the spray paint around, I find it better to just buy a normal one with some accessories and spray paint it. That way you get Mugg + cool crap for the same price as just Mugg (technically for less, since I've never seen blank ones in stores so you'd probably have to pay for shipping as well)
